The most popular church fabrics

The most common and popular type of fabric for church vestments is brocade. Brocade (German Brocat, Italian brocatto – to sew, embroider) is a dense fabric with a convex pattern interspersed with golden or silver threads, silk, or with a large proportion of silk. Currently, it is used very rarely, mainly for bedspreads, upholstery, curtains, or for church vestments.

Brocade for clothing was used from the 8th to the 17th century. Brocade robes testified to the exceptional wealth of the person who wore them. The first factories were located in Byzantium. This fabric was produced mainly for the imperial court.

In the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, production moved to Italy, and from the sixteenth-century French weavers, mainly from Lyon, began to dominate.

In the middle of the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV and the reign of Minister Colbert, this center became a monopoly in brocade production. The luxurious court of Louis XIV and the king himself were the main creators of fashion for brocade dresses, kaftans, and waistcoats. After Louis XV came to power, the fashion for glitter began to fade with the changing tastes of the French court. Altembas is a type of brocade. Greek church fabrics are the basis of our assortment in the church fabrics section.
